As a musical term, 'psychobilly' probably dates from the late 1970s and the emergence of bands like the Cramps, who blended punk with '50s rockabilly to create something that was pretty much the musical equivalent of outsider art. Today, however, it's music that prefigured the punks by 15 years that concerns us, a rich seam that's explored on this 2-CD set. Many of these artists were 'one-hit wonders' who never actually had a hit, garage bands that never left the garage, beatniks who didn't like jazz and surfers who never went near an ocean!
