The Tango has always retained its image of a dance unashamedly sensual in character. Developed in the poorer districts of Buenos Aires during the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. The movements of the original dance were meant to mimic knifefights, seductions, and violent lovers' quarrels. The music retains more than a hint of its origins, especially as played here by acknowledged masters like Astor Piazzolla, Carlos Gardel and Mercedes Simone would have given a far more accurate picture of this adult, sensual, and frequently unsettling music.
