When I visited New Orleans in 2004, a special friendship developed with an old taxi driver. His name was Herb H. Franklin and in his spare time he showed me great record shops, excellent restaurants and told me his interesting life story. Born 1930 in Wiggins, Mississippi, he moved as a child with his parents to Biloxi on the coast. He completed an apprenticeship as a car mechanic, but had no desire for greasy fingers and hired in the Smithwick's pub as a bartender. When the owner retired, Herb took over the establishment and in the late 50s truly developed it into Sin City, as the pub was called. Herb had an amplified jukebox (when bands weren't playing) and when the guy came to change the discs, he bought the rest for a few cents. So for more than a decade a huge collection was created, a small part of which is now being released for Sin City Jukebox 2 on 12" vinyl.
