28 November 1980, Westfalenhalle Dortmund: Two veterans of the Bay Area provide unforgettable moments. Co-founder of Quicksilver Messenger Service and Copperhead, John Cipollina (1943-1989) made US rock history. Cipollina is a typical "Westcoast Jam Area" musician who has played in many groups, including Terry And The Pirates. He also collaborated with Huey Lewis and Robert Hunter (Dark Star), a member of Grateful Dead. Born in 1938 in Chicago and influenced by Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy and Howlin Wolf, Nick Gravenites brought Chicago Blues to the West. It was Gravenites who produced the first album of Quicksilver Mesenger Service. Together with Mike Bloomfield, Gravenites founded the formation Electric Flag, whose mixture of blues, rock, soul, country and jazz gave a memorable debut concert at the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967, making a not insignificant contribution to the burgeoning flower power era. It is therefore fitting that Gravenites and Janis Joplin were members of Big Brother And The Holding Company.
