This fascinating chronicle captures the group-for this round, Krassner, Tim Rutili (Califone), Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jim White (Dirty Three), Shahzad Ismaily, and Jim Becker-trying to tease out the spirit and sound that would accompany Braden King's 2011 film Here. Here: Chicago Sessions is a document of two days of recording that Krassner and co. did at Electrical Audio in Chicago. To the surprise of no one, the music within is masterful and moody, with this shaggy group of artists blending together dusky Americana, gently-rendered psychedelia, drone, and touches of world music. The songs work beautifully in the goal of evoking widescreen images and emotional montages culled from your memory banks. Though the original intent was to integrate this material into the film alongside the previously recorded sessions from Armenia, when the final cut was made the majority of the Chicago material was left on the cutting room floor. With the help of Hired Hand, the Chicago Sessions are now seeing the light of day in a handsome limited edition double vinyl release (with a digital download that includes 5 additional tracks).
